Three must-have SEO strategies

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can consume a lot of time if you’re always looking to add content to your website or even if you’re constantly updating your keyword strategy to compete against others.

However, if you have limited time to work on SEO, here are the three things you can do to help your website rank better on search engines.

Optimise your titles and descriptions

Your page titles and descriptions are usually displayed when your website appears in Google’s search results.

Although page titles and descriptions don’t contribute much to your page’s ranking, they profoundly impact your page’s web traffic — visitors read page titles and descriptions in the search results before deciding which link to click. Your page titles and descriptions directly impact your page’s clickthrough rate, and you must optimise it not only for Google but also for your potential visitors.

Ensure your page title and description are within limitations — 60 characters for the title and 160 characters for the description. Any more than that, your hard work will get truncated on the search results page.

Don’t try to stuff your title and descriptions with keywords. It’s good to include your keywords but don’t overdo it. Potential visitors read these titles and descriptions, so make it short and sweet. The best practice is to tell your visitors exactly what they’re getting by visiting your page.

Structure your content with headings

A search engine’s job is to provide users with the most helpful and relevant content. So if you want your pages to rank higher, you will need to convince search engines that your content is what people are looking for.

Adding relevant headings to your content can help search engines better understand and categorise your page — search engines can read your page headings to find out what your page is about. Having descriptive headings has the added benefit of making your content easier to read from a user’s perspective.

You can use the H1 to H6 tags in your HTML code to mark your text as headings — H1 being the most critical headings and H6 being the least. There are no restrictions on how many of each heading tag you can add to a page.

Add Alt Text for your images

Unlike humans, Google’s crawlers don’t have eyes, so they can’t see what the images on your pages depict. So if you want to let Google know what your images are about, you’ll need to provide that information through Alt Text.

Alt Text is the text displayed in place of an image if the image cannot be displayed. Search engines like Google will parse this text to get an idea of what your images are about, so you must provide descriptive Alt Text for each of your pictures.

Try to keep the Alt Text short but descriptive. Don’t overload it with keywords; Google will treat it as spam.
